About Panther Backers

Over Three Decades of Panther Pride

Our Mission

The mission and purpose of the University's intercollegiate athletics program seek to enhance the academic success, physical and emotional well-being of the student-athlete by providing a variety of competitive sports activities and experiences designed to contribute to the student-athlete's potential for full personal growth and development.

The University athletics program holds membership in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is the sole remaining charter member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Men compete in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, indoor and outdoor track. Women compete in basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, softball, and volleyball.

Panther Backers exists to support this mission. For over three decades, we have raised scholarship funds to ensure PVAMU student-athletes can focus on what matters — their education and their sport.

The PantherBackers

In 1995, three members of the 1963–64 Prairie View A&M national championship team—Kenny Houston (NFL Hall of Famer), along with Alvin Reed and Albert Robertson—came together to discuss strategic ways to raise funds for Prairie View’s athletic department.

From these three alumni teammates, the Panther Backers 501(c)(3) was formed. Since its inception, the Panther Backers have contributed over $1 million to the athletic department, primarily supporting football scholarships.

The Panther Backers is a nonprofit booster club dedicated to supporting and promoting the ongoing development of football at Prairie View A&M University, as well as other athletic programs. The organization operates in compliance with NCAA, SWAC, and Prairie View rules and regulations.

The Panther Backers operates solely on revenue generated through membership donations and fundraising activities.

All contributions to the Panther Backers are tax-deductible.

Special thanks to all current Panther Backer members who have helped contribute to the success of our football program, including winning the SWAC Championship.

If you are not currently a member of the Panther Backers, we encourage you to become one.
